Self Portrait

Hello Again! On my first post I uploaded 2 self portraits that I shot and edited recently. I usually work in Photoshop and have not nearly discovered all that it has to offer. My favorite shot out of the two that I uploaded is the head on shot with the split color. Although I think the other picture is a better shot. I read the tips that were posted on the kodak website, and they were helpful. They suggested that we keep the flash on even outdoors; however, Jerry mentioned that we should turn our flash off while outdoors. Jerry can you clarify?

Thanks for the question... The Kodak site is really a beginner's introduction covering the basics... for many people, when they don't really know how to use light. It is in fact better to use your flash outdoors you when you are not looking at light yourself....that helps cover up problems like extreme backlighting, extreme contrast in sunlight and so on... In this class we are going to learn a more subtle approach to seeing light. Professionals use flash fill all the time... but that is a separate class in itself... learning how to use artificial light effectively is way beyond the scope of this class both in money for equipment (external lighting) and expertise in lighting from multiple directions.... Flash as the main source of light coming from the camera is still very ugly and the quickest way I know to ruing an otherwise good image.

So my advice still is to keep your flash off...
