Hi Everyone....

This is the last week of classes... I just called the registrar's office and was told that the absolute final deadline for posting grades will be Thursday morning. So please have all of your work complete by Wednesday night at midnight. I'll get started grading first thing in the morning on Thursday.

I hope you enjoyed this class in that it offered a break from the usual grind of and the more usual class with readings, papers and tests to take. I have seen so much great work from all of you and have gotten a sense that it was really a revelation for you to be to be able to get out and look at light and design in a new way.

Have a great Christmas holiday! Hopefully I'll see you sometime in the near future in another class. Take care!

Used the water background, however, I did not like the pyramid in the background and took forever to take it out. I find that this actually takes a longer time to edit than a photo.

I found this to be my least favorite assignment of all. I rather use my camera and capture the moment than create it from different items. This is probably great if you are intoxicated among other things.
Anyway, I had to use the crazy side of my brain for this one. What I was trying to capture on this is some type of portal that is sucking everything around it inwards. Hope you can see that without having to read this.

Here are a few of my portraits. I used a peice of white posterboard to reflect the light on the other side of her face. I think these came out fairly well although I wish I had a tripod to use. All of my portraits on fotothing are of the same person (my brave best friend who was the only one who would sit for me!) I am going to try to persuade another "victim" tomorrow.

I love the first shot that is posted here with the red berrys. I was very impressed that my camera was able to focus in on something that small when I was really close to it. The white flowers I wasn't able to get into focus, and I'm not sure why. After several attempts I just gave up.

Ummmmm ... and yes I said I can do this, take a portrait, post it, simple enough. Aghhhhh ( buzzer sound) not that easy. I used a mirror to reflect the light back into my daughter's face, but I'm unsure if I got it just right PLUS I was interrupting her Tv time on her day off so needless to say she was restless, but I captured a few good ones. Some Tips for Winter Shooting from Digital Camera Magazine....

1.	Be an early bird – heave yourself out of bed to catch the frost before it melts. On a clear winters night dew creates feathery white ice crystals or hoar frost – great for macro work.
2.	Expose correctly – make sure your snow shots are correctly exposed. Use either spot or partial metering and dial in +2 stops of compensation, then check on your histogram.
3.	Use trees – the simple lines of bare trees are irresistible at this time of year. Try a number of compositions and lenses for different effects, such as backlighting and silhouetting the best shaped specimens.
4.	Make the most of shadows – the low sunlight of winter is a great time for shooting long shadows. Try using them as a key part of your composition, and to add texture depth and contrast.
5.	Shoot stormy skies – want snow but just get rain? Make the most of stormy skies – get out there and wait until theres a brief gap in the clouds and light spills across your scene

I figured better late then never. I must say that these past two assignments were the most difficult so far. I love this set of photos. I took the suggestion, I think it was Genese, and I took a few shot with my dried flowers submerged in water in a wine glass, set in my window to catch the sunlight, and I got some very interesting results. Some beautiful colors (blues, purples, reds) and reflections in the glass; all on its own. I did very little editing, I faded a few and sharpended most, but no additional color saturation or contrast. Just for fun, I experimented with this photo. It was snowy in Vermont

last week. I couldn't quite get close enough to these horses to capture

a crisp, sharp photograph. Most of the detail was lost in zooming in

(it was blurry to begin with, tho). I added the glow effect.

It is difficult to photograph

animals because they keep moving! And this female was so sassy,

she kept prancing about.

My first victim on the portrait assignment was my son. I am lucky to have a room with plenty of window lighting. I used a portable reflector to bounce some of the
light into the shaded areas of his face. Hope you enjoy.

Portrait Week!

Hi everyone... this is portrait week. here are a few tips and make sure that you get this assignment right.

- To begin with, you need to work with daylight... take your person by a window and have them face out toward the light. Or have light hit 50% or more of the face...

-Put your shoulder against the same wall that the window is on so that you don't have light coming directly at the camera... one of the biggest mistakes people make is to put somebody by a window and then point the camera at them, all the while, the light source is behind them...if there's one theme in this class it is that you have learned to become sensitive to where the light is and what it illuminates...

-Very important... don't let direct sunlight fall on your subject... that will blow out their skin tones and the results will not be very good. Use indirect light... the softer the better.

-Hold your camera vertically...zoom in a bit with your telephoto, and place the top of the head at the top of the frame. If you use at wide-angle setting on your camera that features will be distorted... that's fine for joke shots, but we are trying to fry an egg here and don't want it to get burned.

-While you're leaning into the wall with your shoulder, jam your elbows into your side, holding the camera very steady and gently squeeze the camera shutter. That will help keep your shots much sharper.

-Take your time with your subject... don't get nervous... wait them out if they're being silly or talkative. Notice how beautiful the shot of this child is... for all of the above reasons....

This Was The Hardest Assignment!!

I had the most trouble with this assignmnet, because my subjects got annoyed with me, and getting the white paper to reflect the way I wanted it to was foreign, also we had very grey weather on Sunday, so we had to wait until Monday. I don't know how the pros do it!! My dogs were even more of a challenge!- Steph

I've uploaded the last of my shadows and light images to fotothing. These two are my favorite - I was attempting to find light at the beach, so I shoved my camera (at the risk of my lens) underneath a bunch of sea grass and hoped for the best when I pressed the button. I did work with the colors and light levels in photoshop and these are the end results. Hope you guys enjoy!

I took this picture with two lights above and behind the flower. I tried to see what would happen witht he lighting on the flower. It seems a little washed out. Jerry- How can I get the light to cast the way I want it to? I was going for a soft lighting to just bring out the blue of the flower, but I got a bit of over-lighting. Steph

Hey everyone, so here's two of my recent shots for the macro project. getting in close is definitely a challenge but fun to do. The flower was taken inside on a white mat with a desk light on high very close. The second was taken on a hiking trail while out with my dog I did some cropping to the picture to gain more focus on the berry and not the whole plant it was growing on.

As Robert Capa stated in our reading "If your pictures aren't good enough you're not close enough." I took his advice and hope that the shot is close enough to be good. Used a tripod and the timer so there would not be any shaking since it is very easy to lose focus.

Beach Finds

There are so many little shells, rocks, and pinecones on the beaches near our house.

In my camera's manual, it stated that the closest focus is 11".

This tends to invite zoom-in with editing, but I am attempting to keep that to a minimum now. It appears sometimes that expanding the photograph provides more detail, and a crisper image.
